Why I Love San Pancho: Johanne Pouliot
I remember my first visit to San Pancho as if it were yesterday. It was in Y2K, on my birthday. I flew down from Canada, where the temperature was around -20°. When I arrived in San Pancho, I was smitten. I returned every winter after that, for longer and longer periods, until I finally took the plunge and became a year-round resident.
San Pancho was very different in those days. Highway 200 from Vallarta was still under construction and the village had yet to be “discovered”. It was quite the challenge to find a decent cup of coffee and you could count the full-service restaurants on your fingers. Traffic and parking wasn’t a problem and hardly a soul on the beach. Paradise, indeed!
Well, almost. San Pancho had no Internet at the time and I was working online. The closest Internet cafe was in Puerto Vallarta, in Old Town to boot! It seemed like a never-ending bus trip traveling over a highway which was still in the process of being built. It was an all-day trip just to send an email!
Fortunately, times have changed and San Pancho now has (fairly) reliable Internet. This happy development allows me the opportunity of being a year-round resident in one of the most amazing villages in the Riviera Nayarit!
Now it’s your turn. What are your thoughts about San Pancho and life in Mexico in general? Please enter any comments or suggestions in the form below – we’d love to hear them!
